This week, Critical Start is arming MSSPs and MSPs with actionable, timely cyber threat intelligence, Malwarebytes is urging MSSPs and MSPs to take decisive action against the major surge in ransomware attacks that have happened this year, CyFlare's CEO explains why cybersecurity mesh architecture is becoming a top priority and ConnectWise announced it will help MSPs who are looking to achieve CMMC Level 2 compliance. Here's our roundup.
Critical Start Arms MSSPs, MSPs with Cyber Threat Intelligence
Global cybercrime has shown no sign of decline and is expected to grow by 15% per year over the next five years, reaching $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion in 2015.
That sobering news comes from Critical Start, a Top 250 MSSP specializing in managed detection and response (MDR) and managed cyber risk reduction (MCRR), via its biannual Cyber Threat Intelligence Report. The report examines the top threats observed in the first half of 2024 along with emerging cybersecurity trends impacting the manufacturing, healthcare, technology, professional services, engineering and construction industries. It also includes strategic insights that are crucial for shaping long-term security postures.
Callie Guenther, Cyber Threat Research senior manager at Critical Start, emphasized how the report can be a valuable tool for MSSPs and MSPs.
“The report highlights evolving threat landscapes, with a particular focus on sophisticated APT activities and emerging TTPs that could affect global operations,” Guenther told MSSP Alert. “MSSPs and MSPs can leverage these insights to anticipate and mitigate high-impact threats, improve threat intelligence sharing with clients, and align their services with the latest adversarial techniques, ensuring robust protection for critical infrastructure and sensitive data.”
Guenther urged MSSPs and MSPs to use the information to help them stay ahead of adversaries, reinforce client trust and drive business growth through enhanced threat detection and response capabilities.
As Ransomware Attacks Rise, Malwarebytes Urges MSSP, MSP Action
There has been an alarming increase in ransomware attacks over the past year, underscoring the need for organizations to implement around-the-clock monitoring and investigation of cyber threats.
The news (and advice) comes via a new report from Malwarebytes, “ThreatDown 2024 State of Ransomware,” which shows significant shifts in the tactics and strategies employed by cybercriminals. Accordingly, Malwarebytes urges security teams to “be smart” about how they allocate their limited time and resources and be vigilant to changes in the threat landscape.
“The ever-evolving and often escalating threat landscape has meant that many organizations are turning to MSPs and MSSPs to help manage their IT and security,” Brian Kane, senior director of global channel at Malwarebytes, told MSSP Alert. “It is essential that these service organizations stay informed of the latest trends and adapt their offerings so they safeguard their customers against cyber threats and scams."
Kane noted that report analyzes the recent trends in ransomware, including threat actors’ focus on specific industries and their preference for launching attacks in the early hours of the morning.
“I advise MSPs and MSSPs to review these tactics, techniques and procedures against their current cybersecurity posture and practices, both for themselves and for their customers,” said Kane, who oversees the Malwarebytes’ MSP and global distribution business supporting alliances around the world along with more than 6,000 MSP customers.
CyFlare CEO Explains Why Cyber Security Mesh Architecture is a Top Priority
MSSP Top 250 company CyFlare is taking a new approach to its cybersecurity — a framework called Cyber Security Mesh Architecture (CSMA)
What is CSMA and why is it so important to a Master MSSP like CyFlare?
Traditional security models often focus on securing the perimeter of an organization. But with the rise of cloud computing, remote work and mobile devices, the perimeter is no longer well-defined. In essence, CSMA offers a framework to manage security in an era where digital transformation and distributed environments are the norm.
CyFlare applies CSMA principles by integrating and coordinating multiple security tools to enhance its cybersecurity operations, CyFlare CEO Joe Morin told MSSP Alert. In essence, CSMA allows CyFlare to move beyond the limitations of traditional security perimeters.
ConnectWise to Assist MSPs Seeking CMMC Level 2 Compliance
ConnectWise has rolled out a new program to support its MSP partners on the journey to achieving Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2 compliance requirements.
As technology and regulatory changes continue to impact the cybersecurity landscape, ConnectWise, a software company serving the MSP industry, is helping MSPs in navigating these challenges.
Achieving CMMC Level 2 certification indicates that an organization has moved beyond basic cybersecurity measures and is beginning to implement more formal and structured processes to safeguard sensitive information.
Carter Scheonberg, vice president and chief cybersecurity officer of SoundWay Consulting, a company that helps MSPs with their CMMC compliance, said that it is critically important for an external service provider like ConnectWise to be CMMC 2 certified before their actual clients can become certified.
