Goodbye Server Monitoring, Hello New Relic Infrastructure Monitoring?

In a move that could redefine portions of the cloud and server monitoring market, New Relic Infrastructure is set to launch during the FutureStack 2016 conference next week in San Francisco, CEO Lew Cirne confirmed during an earnings call on Monday.

As ChannelE2E has previously reported, New Relic is extending from its application performance monitoring (APM) heritage to support cloud-centric infrastructure management. The company already competes head-on against AppDynamics in the APM market. The infrastructure monitoring sets up a potential showdown with DataDog.

Roughly 1,500 customers requested access to the New Relic Infrastructure monitoring beta test. A high-end version, called New Relic Infrastructure Professional Edition, will bolster monitoring for the 12 most popular Amazon Web Services components, including CloudFront, DynamoDB, EBS, ElasticCache and many more, Cirne said.

New Relic Infrastructure was "designed to provide real-time visibility in a critical configuration changes that affect the company's cloud infrastructure and intelligently alert users so they can troubleshoot problems and reduce downtime," Cirne added.

Goodbye Traditional Server Monitoring?

In some ways, companies like New Relic could potentially disrupt traditional RMM (remote monitoring and management) tools as server workloads and the underlying infrastructure float off to the cloud.

"The nature of IT problems have changed dramatically over last few years as the clients have moved to cloud," said Cirne. "Traditional alerting and visibility tools that assume a small number of servers aren’t well-suited to the needs of today's enterprise customer. But what's an even bigger point differentiation for New Relic Infrastructure is tracking in real-time the state and configuration across all those servers. Imagine as many of our customers do if a very security flow was exposed by an open source package, New Relic Infrastructure will allow our customers to search across tens of thousands servers and instantly see where that faulty piece of software might be installed. We also track changes in real-time.

At first glance, New Relic Infrastructure is designed for corporate DevOps teams and IT managers who need to monitor cloud infrastructure. But take a closer look and you'll discover New Relic -- and its rivals -- building partner programs and MSP enablement strategies.

ChannelE2E will be reporting live next week from New Relic FutureStack, while also tracking the rival AppDynamics AppSphere 2016.
