Escalating cybersecurity threats, particularly from nation-state actors, have prompted intelligence agencies from the U.S. and other Five Eyes nations to release new guidelines aimed at strengthening small and medium-sized businesses' (SMBs') network defenses, reports SC Media.

SMBs should not only enlist security managers and establish assets and risk inventory but also ensure proper data protection on third-party services, according to the recommendations.

The recommendations also urged SMBs to increase vigilance on competitors that may steal their data and other cybercrime groups.

This advice comes as leaked documents revealed that the Five Eyes nations were exploiting OpSec for intelligence gathering, although the agencies stressed the importance of bolstering private sector security.

"By joining up with our allies and offering consistent advice, we are making it easier for companies working across the world to take steps to keep their ideas and products secure," said MI5 Director General Ken McCallum.
