As concerns about climate change escalate, IBM and NASA are open sourcing one of the most advanced AI models available for climate and weather and making it available on Hugging Face. This model goes beyond weather forecasting to offer new insights for scientists, developers and businesses, IBM and NASA said in a statement.

Most existing AI models for weather focus on forecasting, but this foundation model is designed for short-term (weather) and long-term (climate) science. Along with the base foundation model, IBM and NASA will release two models fine-tuned from the base model that show specific applications, including:

  • Climate and weather data downscaling: This model has been fine-tuned to depict both weather and climate data at up to 12x higher resolution, generating localized weather forecasts and climate projections.
  • How gravity waves affect forecasts: The model helps scientists better visualize gravity waves, which can affect many atmospheric processes such as cloud formation, IBM and NASA said.

This weather and climate model is part of a larger collaboration between IBM Research and NASA to develop advanced AI models, including the world’s largest open source geospatial AI model on Hugging Face. The geospatial model has since been used by governments, companies and public institutions to examine changes in disaster patterns, biodiversity, land use and other geophysical processes.
