The channel is perfectly positioned to address the electronic waste crisis, according to a Canalys Insights report.

The UN’s latest Global E-Waste Monitor report found e-waste is the fastest-growing waste, and it’s being generated at five times the rate at which it’s being recycled. Yikes.

But there's good news, from a channel perspective. According to Canalys research, there is reason to be optimistic about partners’ efforts to minimize the creation of e-waste. "In an otherwise tough time for ESG efforts in the wider industry (look no further than AI’s undeniable role in jeopardizing vendors’ net zero goals, or political strife over ESG itself), the channel’s commitment to the circular economy is unwavering," Canalys said.

Large European partners are leading the charge, and the channel as a whole is well-prepared to process used IT at scale, ensuring devices can be repaired, refurbished or at least recycled, not wasted, Canalys research showed. "Since 2022, there has been a notable rise in the channel’s efforts to expand its capacity for circular IT. Partners continue to acquire IT asset disposition (ITAD) specialists (for instance, EGISS’ acquisition of Refurb), and the channel is investing in new, larger facilities to repair, refurbish and recycle at scale (Advania, for example, will soon open a major ITAD center in Sweden to refurbish up to a million devices annually)."
