And sandboxing is a slow, resource-intensive process: for many fast-moving businesses, accepting email delivery delays of up to 20 minutes is simply not a long-term option.

For URLs, simple domain reputation checks must be replaced with threat intelligence sources that monitor cyberattacks on a global scale and filter out potentially dangerous links. Computer vision analysis, based on image-recognition algorithms, helps to scan attached pictures and identify spoofing emails with images that mimic trustworthy sources.

Real-time scanning of email traffic before delivery offers significant benefits, but most businesses receive and send large volumes of messages — and can afford only a few seconds of delay. Advanced security solutions may achieve this impressive metric by breaking email content down to smaller elements, like URLs and email attachments, to be analyzed by multiple engines at the same time.

Tackling advanced persistent threats (ADTs) and zero-day attacks requires exploit blocking early in the attack chain, before malware can begin to execute. Existing and potential threat patterns should be continuously monitored by an incident response team to ensure holistic visibility of security alerts and incidents.
