What are the biggest cybersecurity challenges in the cloud right now? A recent Sysdig report says LLMs, DDoS and multifactor authentication.

Sysdig’s Threat Research Team (TRT) just released its 2024 Global Cloud Threat Report, and the theme of this year’s report is the double-edged sword of AI, according to the research. As LLMs, DDoS and MFA attacks become the next big target, Sysdig's research found some troubling information:

  • Evolution of resource jacking: LLMjacking is only the beginning, new threats loom in 2025. Sysdig’s TRT recently discovered “LLMjacking,” where cybercriminals racked up huge bills ($100,000 a day) over the past six months to engage in illicit and x-rated activities with cloud-based AI services.
  • Don’t discount Distributed Denial-of-a-Service (DDoS) attacks: On the surface, DDoS attacks may not seem incredibly harmful -- more of a nuisance -- but they could leave victims at risk for data exfiltration, espionage or worse – just look at Microsoft Azure’s recent eight-hour outage.
  • Slow and stealthy wins the race: While some attacks deliver swift, high-impact financial blows, Sysdig’s TRT found more sophisticated attacks like CRYSTALRAY, which remained undiscovered for a decade - compromised 1,500 unique credentials and trained potential hackers using public ICS chats. Yikes.
