Each week, ChannelE2E takes a trip to our affiliate site, MSSP Alert, to bring you the cybersecurity news headlines that matter to your MSP or other channel business.
Cybersecurity has become a key component of managed services businesses and, one could argue, all channel businesses, regardless of the business model. More MSPs are leading their sales conversations with cybersecurity discussions. And cybersecurity services sales continue to be a bright spot in Canalys' analysis of channel business over the last year, even as hardware sales and other sales have slowed.
Here's your roundup of key cybersecurity news this week, including how potential changes to cybersecurity regulations will impact MSSPs, a profile of MSSP Top 250 company Judy Security, how MSSPs are taking advantage of AI and SonicWall and CrowdStrike's new partnership.
Amid Expected Changes to Cyber Policies, MSSPs Can Help
A high-profile nonprofit that helps targets of identity theft is casting a wary eye at the incoming Trump Administration, predicting a reduction in support for the victims of scams and for law enforcement and a hiring boom in the cybercrime market fueled by the growing use of AI by bad actors and lack of broad cybersecurity regulations in the United States.
“As we look toward 2025, the outlook for victims of identity theft, cybercrime and scams is increasingly concerning,” said Eva Velasquez, president of the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). “Anticipated public policy changes and resource reductions could worsen the struggles victims face and leave them with even less support.”
As in other sectors in the United States, many in the cybersecurity field are waiting to see what changes a Trump presidency will bring that will affect an industry that is only growing in importance for businesses, government agencies, and consumers alike.
The predicted reduction in cybersecurity oversight and enforcement by the federal government likely will create significant market opportunities for MSSPs next year and beyond, according to Stephen Kowski, field CTO at SlashNext Email Security+.
SonicWall and CrowdStrike Bring Enterprise Security to SMBs
SonicWall is no stranger to partnering with other cybersecurity vendors to expand the managed detection and response (MDR) services its MSSPs and MSPs can deliver to their SMB customers.
The channel-first security provider from Milpitas, California, has come together with the likes of SentinelOne and Sophos, so in that sense, the deal announced this week with CrowdStrike to create a new MDR offering should come as no surprise.
But there is a difference, according to Michael Crean, senior vice president of managed security services at SonicWall. Both SentinelOne and Sophos have a presence in the SMB space, Crean told MSSP Alert. That’s not necessarily true of CrowdStrike.
“CrowdStrike has been an enterprise vendor, selling their products to enterprises and very large companies,” he said. “We have a huge focus on SMBs. [With the new partnership], we have the opportunity to take their technology to our partners and to our SMBs.”
MSSP 250: AI Opens New Revenue Streams for MSSPs That Adopt It
To Tony Pietrocola, AI isn’t just a nice-to-have technology for MSSPs, it’s a matter of survival. Those who adopt the rapidly emerging technology will position themselves as leaders among their peers and reap the benefits of huge demand for advanced cybersecurity solutions. Those that don’t will see their businesses suffer next year.
AgileBlue, 104 on the 2024 Top MSSP 250 list, is not going to miss out, Pietrocola, president of the Valley View, Ohio-based company, told MSSP Alert. AgileBlue provides an AI-based SecOps platform and is “aggressively expanding our AI capabilities to drive growth via new revenue streams,” he said.
“AI is allowing us to do more of this for our clients’ cloud environments, and this will lead to new products we can bring to market as the cloud migrations continue to boom,” Pietrocola said. “We are on quarterly launch cycles, so we will add AI-based technology every quarter. Some will be new products, other releases will be upgrades to our existing platform, strengthening our AI interactions.”
