The market for cloud-based managed services will have a 20 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2016 to 2020, according to Technavio.
Key areas of focus include managed security services, managed mobility services, managed hosting services and managed network services, the market researcher says. Technavio also points to Cisco Systems, HP Enterprise, IBM and NTT Data as leaders in the cloud-based managed services market.
ChannelE2E Says: In some ways, the report surfaced just as a big potential shift from IT giants toward managed CSPs accelerated. Amazon introduced its owned AWS Managed Services in December 2016. And Rackspace has been expanding its managed services offerings for AWS and Microsoft Azure.
Some pundits think the big cloud providers will compete with MSPs that support small business customers. ChannelE2E respectfully disagrees. Neither Amazon nor Microsoft have the resources to chase the SMB managed services market. Both will battle for Global 2000 customers, while striving to empower channel partners for the SMB sector. In fact, here are 50 MSPs that are already cashing in on AWS management opportunities.
Even IBM, which surely sells managed cloud services, leaves plenty of room for partners. Continuum, for instance, hosts its backup and disaster recovery (BDR) platform in IBM's cloud. MSPs tap into that BDR platform to safeguard SMB customer data.
The bigger opportunities longer-term involve application performance management (APM) services that optimize cloud- and on-premises applications, ChannelE2E believes. The APM market features such companies as AppDynamics, Dynatrace and New Relic, among others. Datadog will also enter the APM market soon.
Still, the bread-and-butter managed cloud services market also will continue to grow -- especially as customers seek savvy cloud partners for their storage, business continuity, mobile and security needs.
