SC Media reports that cyberattack risk across the U.S. was highest in Colorado, which recorded 10,776 annual victims and nearly $105 million in annual losses from cyberattacks from a mid-sized population between 2020 and 2023.
Despite only a 3.8% increase in cyberattack victimization across the state since 2017, losses spiked by 58.7% during the same period, according to a report from Kiteworks.
New York had the second-highest cyber risk, having 27,205 annual victims and more than $440 million in losses from a population of over 19.5 million residents from 2020 to 2023.
"By contrast, Massachusetts reported one-third the number of victims (8,749) over the same period as New York. New York has seen a 14.4% increase in victims over four years, with reports showing cyberattack complaints up 53% since 2022," said Kiteworks, which also noted business email compromise and check fraud as the most profitable cyberattacks.
