To understand just how dramatically Amazon Web Services is changing the face of enterprise corporate IT, check out some thoughts from Roy Joseph, managing director of technology infrastructure, client platforms and banking technology at Goldman Sachs Group.
During an AWS re:Invent keynote this morning, Joseph shared these Goldman Sachs technology nuggets:
- One in four employees is an engineer;
- the company has 1.5 billion lines of code;
- those engineers have their hands in 7,000+ applications;
- Goldman is using 200,000 servers in a cloud environment; and
- Overall, Goldman now has 1.2 million compute cores.
Customer Privacy and Data Protection
The company is hyper-sensitive about customer privacy and data protection. Embracing AWS was not an easy sell within Goldman Sachs, Joseph conceded.
Among the key reasons Goldman went with AWS: Bring your own key (BYOK) technology along with real-time data and historical logs to ensure trust management. Also, the west coast Amazon team felt like it was "right in the room with us" at the Goldman headquarters as the financial giant built out key applications on the cloud.
