Pat Gelsinger stepped down from his role as CEO of Intel yesterday, amid an already tumultuous year for the tech giant. We've also seen that he "was fired," "pushed out," "resigned" and/or "retired." Which is it? Regardless, the outcome is the same.

And TechCrunch says he'll have a soft landing; a $10 million+ severance package.

As SFGATE reported, Intel announced the move in a blog post yesterday, writing that Gelsinger left his CEO role and stepped down from the board of directors effective Sunday. Two senior executives, David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus, were named interim co-CEOs while Intel’s board searches for a new top executive, according to AP

Intel has lost market share to rivals just as artificial intelligence hype makes such chips more valuable. Intel’s stock dropped around 50% this year; in August, Intel announced 15,000 layoffs, and the company reported a record $16.6 billion quarterly loss in October — in part due to the costs of those layoffs and restructuring. Intel cut hundreds of workers in California as part of the sweeping layoffs, SFGATE also reported.
