5 Channel Partner Updates: 18 April 2016

Good morning, channel partners. Here are five technology news updates, insights, chatter, and plenty more to sip on for Monday, April 18, 2016. Actually, there are 10 entries for VARs, managed services providers (MSPs), cloud services providers (CSPs) and independent software vendors (ISVs) to sip on. 10. AWS Summit Chicago: It's a busy week for technology conferences. Keep an eye on AWS Summit Chicago, New York TechDay 2016 and SMB TechFest Q2. Track all upcoming technology conferences for channel partners using the ChannelE2E Technology Event Calendar. 9. Winning Hand?: Verizon apparently is the leading bidder to acquire Yahoo. Yesterday was the deadline for preliminary bids. Major Internet and media players like Time, Alphabet, Comcast and AT&T did not offer bids for Yahoo, according to Bloomberg. Yahoo has been seeking takeovers amid a struggle to define the struggling web giant's future. Verizon, meanwhile, has successfully turned around AOL and apparently hopes to do the same with Yahoo. More details could potentially emerge when Yahoo announces quarterly results on Tuesday (April 19).

8. Going Google: GoDaddy Chief Technology Officer Elissa Murphy is jumping to Google for an undisclosed position. Arne Josefberg, GoDaddy's chief information and infrastructure officer, will move up into the company's CTO slot, Fortune reported. Murphy's move comes just as GoDaddy itself begins to build out its cloud business, with a particular emphasis on SMB customers. 7. Cloud Spending Accelerates (Again): Global spending on public cloud services is expected to grow 16% to $204.2 billion this year, compared with 13.8% growth in 2015 and a 17.7% rise in 2014, according to Gartner. Meanwhile, JP Morgan Chase predicts 41.6% of corporate workloads at big companies will run in the public cloud within the next five years, up from 16.2% today. 6. Unpaid Salaries: iYogi, the remote IT support provider, apparently has not paid certain employees for their services. iYogi also faces a range of lawsuits alleging unpaid bills, breach of contract and other violations. We'll be back with more thoughts on this soon. 5. Dropbox Alternative for MSPs?: Gladinet, which positions its Centrestack software as a business-oriented Dropbox alternative, now integrates with ConnectWise's LabTech platform for RMM (remote monitoring and management). The move comes a few days after Dropbox confirmed growing momentum in the IT channel. Meanwhile, Box has also been making a partner push, though channel-centric options like Autotask Workplace, eFolder Anchor and Datto Drive have been attracting MSP attention. 4. Intel Layoffs?: That's the rumor. 3. IBM Earnings: They company's latest quarterly results are expected to surface after U.S. markets close today (Monday). My big question: How come IBM Watson hasn't been able to predict the company's continued slide or eventual turnaround date? Hmmm... 2. EMC, VMware Earnings: As Dell seeks to finalize its $67 billion buyout of EMC, investors will be watching to see how EMC and offshoot VMware performed in their most recent quarters. We'll get the answers when both VMware and EMC announce results on April 19 and April 20, respectively. 1.
