11. Carbonite Momentum: Carbonite, the cloud backup provider, announced major business momentum this morning -- particularly in the SMB segment involving the EVault buyout. We'll share more details soon.
10. CIOs Leading Cloud Services Push: First, the good news. Roughly 72% of businesses say CIOs are the primary driver for their companies' cloud migrations, according to a Unisys survey. However, 63% say cost reduction is the key motivation for cloud adoption. Cost reduction -- seriously? How about speed to market and flexibility, folks.
9. IBM Buying Retail PoS Company?: IBM is negotiating to potentially buy Revel Systems, which specializes in cloud-based Point-of-Sale (PoS) applications for retail customers, Blooomberg reports. Venture capitalists valued the company at roughly $500 million.
8. Juniper Acquisition: Juniper Networks has acquired Aurrion, which will strengthen the company's optical networking technology for high-speed networks. The announcement surfaced in a blog post from Pradeep Sindhu, co-founder and CTO of Juniper Networks.
7. Truck Rolls 2.0?: Verizon is buying Fleetmatics Group Plc for about $2.4 billion as part of a deeper push into the fleet management market and GPS market. The big question: Will service providers plug into Fleetmatics for their truck rolls and on-premises customer support needs?
6. Salesforce Buys A Word Processor?: Salesforce is acquiring Quip, a collaboration application that competes in some ways with Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Quip's co-creator previously launched Google Maps... Hmmm...
5. Chromebooks for Business: Charles Schwab, the financial services giant, now leverages Google Chromebooks for a secure investment advisory service. The Charles Schwab Chromebook rollout blankets roughly 250 branch offices nationwide.
4. AVG and Distribution: D&H Distributing has agreed to provide AVG’s complete AVG Business product portfolio to its established network of VARs and MSPs throughout the United States and Canada. The offerings include AVG Managed Workplace, AVG CloudCare, AVG Internet Security and AVG AntiVirus Business Edition solutions. AVG has been expanding its partner program reach ahead of the company's $1.3 billion sale to Avast Software.
3. Cloud Cost Calculator Tool: Unigma, which develops a unified cloud management platform, has launched a beta of its Cloud Comparison Calculator. The tool could help IT service providers and customers to compare and contrast costs for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
2. Partner Programs:
- CloudGenix, which focuses on software-defined wide-area networks, has launched the CloudGenix Partner Program. In the past eight weeks, CloudGenix has signed more than 25 partners, several of which are also Cisco Gold Certified partners, the company says.
- Cylance has launched a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) Program. The company, by the way, is generating major buzz for its ability to stop or vastly reduce ransomware attacks...
