Microsoft Build 2019, the company's annual developer conference, kicked off May 6 in Seattle. Among the key themes: Rallying more developers to:

  • write applications that run atop Microsoft Azure;
  • develop intelligent agents; and
  • extending those apps out to IoT sensors and edge devices.

1. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Keynote: Watch the livestream of Nadella's keynote here. His presentation was Monday, May 6 at 8:30 a.m. PT.

2. Azure AI Technology & Cognitive Services: Keep an eye on Azure Cognitive Services, which power applications to see, hear, respond, translate, reason and more.

3. AI and Azure Search: Customers will be able to apply Cognitive Services algorithms to extract new insights from their structured and unstructured content, Microsoft says.

4. Azure Machine Learning: New developments in Machine Learning, Microsoft says, will simplify the process of building, training and deploying machine learning models.

5. Azure SQL Database Edge: As the name implies, this is combines data streaming with in-database machine learning and graph capabilities to enable intelligence on the edge, the company says.

6. IoT Plug and Play: This is a "new open modeling language to seamlessly connect IoT devices to the cloud, enabling developers to navigate one of the biggest challenges they face — deploying IoT solutions at scale," Microsoft claims.

7. Azure Blockchain Service: The fully managed service simplifies the formation, management and governance of consortium blockchain networks, allowing businesses to focus on workflow logic and app development, the company says. Key partners include J.P. Morgan Quorum -- the first distributed ledger platform available through Azure Blockchain Service.

8. IoT Partnerships: Octonion and Avnet are leveraging Microsoft’s new IoT Plug and Play technology to quickly prototype, pilot, and produce end-to-end IoT solutions using Azure IoT certified device, the company's say.

10. Microsoft-Red Hat Partnership: Red Hat and Microsoft announced the general availability of Azure Red Hat OpenShift, which brings a jointly-managed enterprise-grade Kubernetes solution to Microsoft's public cloud. The move comes just as the U.S. Department of Justice approves IBM's pending $34 billion buyout of Red Hat.
