Sessions covering the topic will feature Dustin Bolander, CEO and founder of Beltex Insurance, among other speakers.

“When I hear MSPs talking about insurance, they are wrong more often than not, and insurance talking about MSPs is the same,” he said. “I’m going to dive into why a lot of security controls don’t actually matter, the three factors that really set the price of a policy (hint: none of them are actually cybersecurity), and how most MSSPs are unprepared for insurance stealing their business. After building two cyber policies, I am going to share my experience on where reinsurance and startups are driving the cyber insurance market the next few years.”

Cyberinsurace: What MSSPs and MSPs Need to Know

Bolander is a twice-MSP owner, and in 2020 started consulting for the insurance industry as an advisor to FifthWall. In 2022 he launched Beltex, which he describes as the first and only channel-friendly insurance policy that leverages the great defenses that MSPs/MSSPs already provide to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Sessions include a panel discussion, The State of Cybersecurity Insurance and Warranties (and What’s the Difference?). This panel offers a more comprehensive overview of today’s trends that MSPs and MSSPs need to know to make informed cybersecurity insurance decisions, with a look toward what’s coming in 2025. Panelists include Bolander as well as Timothy Guim , president and CEO of PCH Technologies and John Roberts, general manager of Security at Coalition.

Separately, Bolander will lead a session, Insurance is Evil: How We Went from an MSSP to Creating an MSP-Focused Policy. This session will offer insurance myth busting advice — from someone who went from MSP to owning their own policy. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn why insurance carriers act the way they do, who the real customers of carriers are (insurance agents) and what underwriting controls actually matter.

Bolander’s Tales From the Cyber Insurance Front

Bolander told MSSP Alert how he went from the MSSP side of the cybersecurity industry to insurance and “learned a ton along the way” — and that he looks forward to sharing those experiences with conference attendees. He believes most security professionals have a lack of knowledge about one side or the other.
