Dell, EMC: Done Deal On Sept. 7, Creating Dell Technologies

Share

Dell Inc. will finalize its buyout of EMC Corp. on Wednesday, September 7 -- officially operating as Dell Technologies thereafter. The business combination has already received all required shareholder and regulatory approvals worldwide.

Michael Dell used just about every SEO-friendly technology term to describe the resulting business combination. In a prepared statement he said:

“This is an historic moment for both Dell and EMC. Combined, we will be exceptionally well-positioned for growth in the most strategic areas of next generation IT including digital transformation, software-defined data center, converged infrastructure, hybrid cloud, mobile and security. Our investments in R&D and innovation, along with our 140,000 team members around the world, will give us unmatched scale, strength and flexibility, deepening our relationships with customers of all sizes.”

Dell Technologies: Rivalries and Market Shifts

Still, Dell Technologies will face intense competition as it strives to march forward against established rivals, disruptive upstarts and major IT industry market shifts. Channel partners should keep a close eye on these 10 Dell Technologies moves, challenges and opportunities as the company strives to hit the ground running on Sept. 7.

Giants like Cisco Systems, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Oracle have pushed into many of the market sectors Michael Dell mentioned. And upstarts specializing in hyperconverged infrastructure, SDDC, and all flash storage have been gaining momentum.

Dell and EMC must also live in a world where Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure have emerged as the central building blocks for many of today's most pressing corporate IT projects.

Dell Technologies: Key Technologies

Still, Dell Technologies' portfolio includes a range of promising offerings. EMC's ownership of Virtustream gives Dell a viable public, private and hybrid cloud alternative. And a major stake in VMware gives Dell Technologies credibility in the multi-cloud management sector.

When Dell Technologies launches as a unified company, a clear channel organization also will be in place -- led by John Byrne. The company also has been building out a separate Internet of Things partner program that will soon embrace systems integrators.

Dell Technologies also will shed a few businesses. The pending sale of SonicWall and Quest Software, for instance, is expected to be completed around November 2016, sources say.
