At first glance, HP Enterprise is spinning off its IT services business and merging it with CSC. The result will be a newly named IT services company. But take a closer look and you'll notice another piece of the business -- called HPE Technology Services (TS) Consulting -- that HPE will continue to own.
So what exactly is HPE Technology Services Consulting? Think of it as the company's professional services organization, which manages IT projects for end-customers, according to Bob Conklin, VP of worldwide marketing for Technology Services.
HPE Senior VP and GM Rafael Brugnini shared a deeper description during a session at HP Enterprise Discover 2016 in Las Vegas this week. We gained additional insights from Daryl Ganas, VP of Global IT Enterprise Group and Conklin.
Before HPE described how it helps customers, Ganas described how HPE's own internal IT team works. That team handles:
- 900 projects per year
- 260,000 tickets per month
- The key to success involves a culture shift that always focuses on "movement at the speed of business."
HPE Technology Services Consulting: Offerings
The typical TS Consulting engagement with customers involves HPE taking three steps:
- Advise: Developing a recommendation for the customer, based on workshops and discovery.
- Transform: Designing the solution.
- Integrate: Deploying the solution.
For example, CenterPoint Energy called on HPE to develop a new, energy-efficient data center. And The University of Nottingham had the company develop a secure system for managing and analyzing qualitative and quantitive data.
HPE Technology Services Consulting: Outcomes
Overall, it sounds like HPE TS Consulting helps customers to deliver innovative IT projects on budget and on schedule.
Brugnini pointed to common IT project failings in the enterprise market, where"
- One in six IT projects have a cost overrun of 200 percent and a schedule overrun of 70 percent.
- 75 percent of IT execs believe their IT projects are doomed from the start.
Having a strong project management culture will dramatically improve those figures, IDC asserted during the session. In contrast, 70 percent of digital transformation projects will fail because they lack a strong management of change culture. The strong culture requires four things, IDC says:
- The right reporting structures.
- The right prioritization for projects and processes.
- The right performance management that rewards people for executing on projects.
- The right practices to capture, share and use project management best practices for all projects.

The bottom line: Even as HPE spins off and merges an IT services arm with CSC, the company will continue to flex its muscle in the professional services market.
